Get To Know: NVIDIA Networks

NVIDIA is perhaps best known for their high-end graphics cards, but they are also an enterprise provider of networking solutions. NVIDIA offers a number of capabilities when it comes to networking, making them a versatile option for businesses.

At Infrastar, we love recommending NVIDIA’s networking products to our clients, so long as they are the right fit for their needs, so in our latest Get To Know article, we thought we’d take a look at what NVIDIA offers from a networking perspective.

More than just graphics: What you need to know about NVIDIA

NVIDIA was formed on April 5, 1993, by Jensen Huang (CEO as of 2021), a Taiwanese-American who previously worked at CoreWare at LSI Logic and was a microprocessor designer at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Chris Malachowsky, an electrical engineer who formerly worked at Sun Microsystems, and Curtis Priem, a senior staff member.

In 1993, the three founders thought that accelerated or graphics-based computing was the next wave of computing’s proper path because it could tackle issues that general-purpose computing couldn’t.

They determined that video games would have enormous sales volume and that they were one of the most computationally difficult problems. The company’s flywheel was to reach big markets and obtain huge funding for complex computational problems, and it was founded with only $40,000 in the bank.

In 2020, NVIDIA acquired Mellanox Technologies, ‘uniting two of the world’s leading companies in high performance and data centre computing. Combining NVIDIA’s leading computing expertise with Mellanox’s high-performance networking technology enables customers to achieve higher performance, greater utilisation of computing resources and lower operating costs.’

Noteworthy Networking

NVIDIA Networking provides some of the best-in-class high-performance networking technology in the world.

The high-performance computing (HPC), cloud, Web 2.0, machine learning, data analytics and storage markets are making more and more demands for computing power that is faster, more efficient, and can be scaled up or down as needed.

NVIDIA provides complete solutions that support both InfiniBand and Ethernet networking technologies.

NVIDIA has a suite of software products that helps bridge the gap between servers, applications and fabric elements. These products work together or separately to improve monitoring, reduce latency and free up CPU cycles to make applications run faster. This can lead to better productivity and business results.

Infrastar’s Top-Three NVIDIA Networking Products

Here at Infrastar, it has been extremely hard to narrow it down, but the top three most impressive pieces of NVIDIA technology we have come across so far include the following:

  • InfiniBand;
  • Bluefield DPU; and
  • NVIDIA A100.

Complex workloads need very fast processing of high-resolution simulations, huge amounts of data and algorithms that can be processed in parallel. NVIDIA InfiniBand — the world’s only fully off loadable, In-Network Computing platform — provides the dramatic leap in performance we need to achieve unmatched performance in high-performance computing.

Bluefield DPU

NVIDIA’s BlueField data processing unit (DPU) helps to create unprecedented innovation for modern data centres. By offloading, accelerating and isolating a broad range of advanced networking, storage and security services, BlueField DPUs provide a secure and accelerated infrastructure for any workload in any environment-from the cloud to data centres.

The NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPU delivers unprecedented acceleration at every scale, making it perfect for powering the world’s highest-performing elastic data centres for AI, data analytics and HPC. Powered by the NVIDIA Ampere Architecture, A100 is the engine of the NVIDIA data centre platform.

The A100 80GB has a memory bandwidth of over 2 terabytes per second (TBs). This makes it the perfect choice for running the largest models and datasets.
